Robert Lieff

Robert L. Lieff was the founder of Lieff Cabraser Heimann and Bernstein, LLP. Under his direction, Lieff Cabraser became one of the largest plaintiff law firms in the world, with 75 lawyers and 200 employees in San Francisco and New York. Mr. Lieff founded the firm in 1972, after seven years as a partner of Melvin Belli in San Francisco.

Mr. Lieff was a key player in landmark national cases including Exxon Valdez, Holocaust litigation and the 1998 Tobacco Settlement.

In the past seven years his focus has been on international litigation. He created the Global Justice Forum, an international network of lawyers, which meets annually, as well as the Global Justice Network.

Mr. Lieff graduated from Columbia University Law School (J.D.) and Graduate School of Business (M.B.A.) in 1962. Mr. Lieff endowed the Lieff Cabraser Heimann and Bernstein Clinical Professorship of Human Rights Law at Columbia Law School and has undertaken to endow the Robert L. Lieff Chair in Cross-Border Litigation. He is a member of the Dean’s Council at the Law School.
